Thompson First Group is seeking Manual Machinists for direct placement opportunities for a local client in Portsmouth, VA.

Candidates that have a background working in a Machine Shop or in a Tool and Die setting are encouraged to apply.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • A candidate for this position can expect to assist in the performance of, and be trained in the following tasks:

  • Travel to customer locations locally, throughout the United States, and abroad to perform site surveys and carry out repairs.

  • Transport and set up tools, machinery, and fixtures to support machining operations.

  • Perform machining operations using equipment such as; Portable milling machines, clamshell lathes, line boring systems, grinding machines, hydraulic tensioning systems, as well as various hand and power tools.

  • Take measurements of machined features using precision measuring equipment.

  • Performs mechanical assembly and disassembly of equipment using a variety of hand and power tools.

  • Communicates with customers and government representatives to coordinate work onsite.

  • Completes inspection and as-found condition reports for completed work.

Preferred Machining Skills:

  • Lathes, Grinders, Boring Mills, Planers, Portable Tools

  • Turn, Drill, Tap, Bore, Hone, Polish Machine Processes

  • Large parge machining experience (ex: ship propeller shafting, ship steering gear, etc)

  • In-place machining experience is desired

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • At least 5 years related experience is preferred.

  • Language skills - effectively communicate and understand job instructions both verbally and written in the English language. Ability to effectively interpret and translate instructions to other employees in a professional and respectful manner

  • Ability and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • A strong, proven interest in engineering and mechanical systems.

  • Read blueprints and measuring tools.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations.

Additional Requirements:

  • Candidate must be able to pass a background check to gain access to sites that perform work on US DOD Contracts. (on-site)

  • Canidate must have experience working with on-site machining or industrial manual machining.

  • Candidate should have a good driving record.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move or transfer products with an overhead crane.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. at a time when required.

  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach overhead with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb ladders, and use stairs.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
